Parent-led reviews with supervised junior tester feedback

Kids Electric Scooters

Best electric scooters for kids, ranked by what actually matters.

We review kids scooters the same way a careful parent would — brakes, speed cap, rider fit, and whether a cautious first-timer can build confidence on it. Junior Scout adds the kid-side data: comfort, stability, and repeat-use interest.

Speed cap 10 mph maximum for ages 8–10
Brake type Hand brake preferred over foot-only
Rider weight Max capacity must exceed child + 20%
Setup Parent can assemble in under 20 minutes

#1 Top Pick

Segway Ninebot eKickScooter Zing E10

Ages 6–12

Top speed10 mph
Rangeup to 7 mi
Weight13.9 lbs
Max rider110 lbs
BrakesElectronic front + rear foot

The safest combination of speed cap, light weight, and push-start design we've tested at this price. No throttle-only takeoff — kids must kick to start. Junior Scout gave it the highest confidence score.

Best for: First-time riders ages 6–10

#2 Best Value

Razor E100

Ages 8+

Top speed10 mph
Rangeup to 40 min
Weight17 lbs
Max rider120 lbs
BrakesHand-operated front brake

The most trusted brand in kids electric scooters for a reason. The E100 has a proven safety record, wide foot deck, and reasonable speed cap. The hand brake is easier to learn than foot brakes for most kids. Chain-driven motor is loud but reliable.

Best for: Ages 8–12, value-focused families

#3 Most Room to Grow

Gotrax APEX

Ages 8+

Top speed15.5 mph
Rangeup to 12 mi
Weight26.9 lbs
Max rider154 lbs
BrakesElectronic + rear fender

Higher speed cap than the others — we recommend this only for older kids (10+) who've already mastered riding at lower speeds. Solid build quality for the price. Larger deck handles bigger kids comfortably.

Best for: Ages 10–14, already confident riders

#4 Best for Young Beginners

Razor E90

Ages 8+

Top speed10 mph
Rangeup to 50 min
Weight14 lbs
Max rider120 lbs
BrakesHand-operated front brake

Lighter and narrower than the E100, which makes it better for smaller kids. The slower 10 mph cap and simple hand brake make it one of the more confidence-building first scooters. Very easy setup for parents.

Best for: Smaller kids ages 8–10, cautious first riders

What age is right for an electric scooter?

The answer depends on balance, judgment, and local rules — not just the birthday.

Ages 5–7 Kick scooter only

Motor-assisted scooters move too fast for kids still building balance and judgment. Start with a 3-wheel kick scooter, then graduate to 2-wheel as balance improves.

Our picks: No electric scooter at this age.

Ages 8–10 Electric — 10 mph cap only

Judgment and reaction time are still developing. A 10 mph cap gives enough fun without the risk of outpacing their braking ability. Deck size should match foot length — overcrowded footing is a fall risk.

Our picks: Razor E90, E100, or Segway Zing E10.

Ages 11–13 Electric — up to 15 mph if already experienced

Kids who have been riding for 1–2 years at 10 mph can handle a moderate speed increase. New riders at this age should still start at 10 mph. Always confirm local speed rules.

Our picks: Gotrax APEX, Razor E200 (12+ only).

Ages 14+ Standard adult entry-level scooters

Teen-sized frames and more road judgment. Adult scooters offer better weight capacity and deck size. Check local e-scooter laws — many areas require a minimum age of 16 to ride on public roads.

Our picks: Gotrax GXL V2, Segway Ninebot E22.
