Hoverboards

Safe hoverboards for kids — only UL 2272 certified picks.

Non-certified hoverboards have caused fires and injuries. Every board we recommend has passed UL 2272 electrical and fire safety testing. We also check speed cap, minimum rider weight, and balance system behavior before recommending anything to families.

Every board on this page is UL 2272 certified. This is the only official safety standard for hoverboard electrical systems. We do not recommend non-certified boards.

What parents need to know before buying.

UL 2272 certification

The only standard that tests hoverboard electrical and fire safety. Every board we recommend is UL 2272 certified. Non-certified boards have caused fires. Do not buy without it.

Speed cap matters

7–8 mph is the right ceiling for kids learning. At 10+ mph, falls become significantly more dangerous. Keep beginners under 8 mph until they've logged real hours of practice.

Smooth surfaces only

Standard hoverboards are designed for smooth pavement. Gravel, grass, and cracked surfaces will throw off the self-balancing. Off-road boards exist but are not for beginners.

Helmet is required

Balance mistakes happen fast on a hoverboard — faster than on a scooter. A multi-sport helmet is the minimum. Wrist guards and knee pads are strongly recommended for the first month.

Charging safety

Charge in a room you can monitor, not overnight unsupervised. Unplug once fully charged. Use only the included charger. Aftermarket chargers are a fire risk.

Weight minimum matters too

Most hoverboards require a minimum rider weight of 44 lbs to activate the self-balancing sensors. Below this, the board won't function correctly and falls are more likely.

#1 Top Pick

Swagtron T580

Ages 8+

Top speed7.5 mph
Rangeup to 8 mi
Weight17.6 lbs
Max rider187 lbs
CertificationUL 2272 ✓

Our most recommended board for first-time kid riders. The Bluetooth learning mode locks speed to a crawl, which gives cautious riders time to build balance before unlocking full speed. Self-balancing is smooth. Junior Scout called it 'feels like it's helping me.'

Best for: Ages 8–12, first hoverboard

#2 Best Budget

Gotrax Hoverfly ECO

Ages 8+

Top speed7.4 mph
Rangeup to 12 mi
Weight16.5 lbs
Max rider176 lbs
CertificationUL 2272 ✓

Best value board that still carries the UL 2272 certification. Slightly longer range than our top pick. Self-balancing is reliable. No app or learning mode, which makes setup simpler but removes the speed-training option.

Best for: Value-focused families, ages 10+

#3 Best for Teens

Segway Ninebot S

Ages 12+

Top speed10 mph
Rangeup to 13.7 mi
Weight28 lbs
Max rider220 lbs
CertificationUL 2272 ✓

Heavier and faster than the others — not a first board for younger kids. But for confident teen riders who've already mastered a slower hoverboard, the Ninebot S offers better build quality, longer range, and a magnetic charger that holds up better than standard ports.

Best for: Confident riders ages 12–16

Hoverboard or scooter — which is safer for kids?

Hoverboard
  • Hands-free — full-body balance required
  • Higher fall frequency for beginners
  • Faster learning curve, more impressive to kids
  • Better for older kids with existing board sports experience
  • Best indoors or on very smooth pavement
Electric scooter
  • Handlebars provide stability reference
  • Easier for absolute beginners
  • More predictable braking response
  • Better for younger or more cautious riders
  • Handles varied pavement better

When in doubt, start with a scooter. See our kids scooter guide.
